Our Curriculum

The format of the classes was created to satisfy the following components:

      • a comprehensive curriculum that goes deeper than typical textbook questions
      • the advantage of a class situation where students can be with others who think like them
      • in 1.5 hours cover as much content, if not more, as is covered in a whole week of day school

Classes have been designed to challenge students at one grade level each year, with students working through the curriculum together as a class. Once students are accepted to the program they are normally placed into the same grade as at day school; so a grade 3 student would be placed in a grade 3 Spirit of Math class. However, the material covered and expectations of the students are much higher. Grades are never mixed – classes are designed to challenge students at each specific grade, meeting the cognitive reasoning skills that students have typically developed by that grade.

Students attend the same class with the same students for an entire academic year studying a set curriculum. Therefore all Spirit of Math classes of each grade follow the same lesson each week. There is homework to be completed before each class, tests at the end of each unit, and an exam for every grade at the end of the school year. In addition, the grades 1 through 4 students all write a Spirit of Math contest in February and all grades enjoy participating in many national and international competitions.

Progress reports and report cards are handed out 3 times a year. The progress reports for grades 1 through 4 provide an overview of marked work, but do not give an overall mark. The report cards for grades 5 and up provide an overview of all that was marked, and also give an overall weighted mark which includes assignments, tests, homework, final exam, and a participation and cooperation mark.Students must pass the year to enter the next grade.
